I agree with Jane, digital literacy and storytelling offers us juicy ways to do what we have always done. It is attractive to students (we know engagement is key for learning), it encourages different types and kinds of learning (mars bars, twix, violet crumbles), and is cheaply and easily available!
But enough with the analogies!
Digital storytelling encourages students to develop important literacy skills. It lets us piece together all the different curriculum areas in one place. (Sorry, couldn't resist another analogy!!)

This has been a really great series, Jane and Jo -- thanks!
ReplyDeleteOne final question (which is not related to your central point!):
In regards to the comment: It is attractive to students (we know engagement is key for learning)...
Do others think that true student engagement achieved through "attractive" learning activities or seemingly boring, but challenging and stimulating learning activities?
To me it is an important question because I fear (as you can read in my final post) that we can become swept-up in new technologies that might have little benefit to student engagement and learning.
Hi Stephen
ReplyDeleteI have to say that yes, if an activity isn't 'attractive' to students then what they learn is likely to be less in depth and transferable. I think engagement through 'seemingly' boring but challenging activities can promote learning but the teacher is going to have to push the learning more. I think the student is less likely to be intrinsically motivated. My opinion, for what it's worth!
Thanks
Hi Stephen and Jo,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Jo on this one. Our eyes and the visual stimuli that they see is highly important in all aspects of life... As the analogy goes 'we eat with our eyes', 'first impressions count' all of these are constructed by our eyes and what we see. Sorry i had to use analogies too, couldn't help myself. The material we create may hinder or benefit our students learning. Make the work look good and they eat it!
