He includes digital storyteling as one of many stategies that can be used to address the differing needs of new literacy. I think this presentation articulates my position for this debate really clearly - there should not be one 'best' strategy (promoted as the one-size-fits-all solution) for addressing the student's digital literacy learning needs - there needs to be multiple strategies adapted and shaped for differing requirements and audiences.
I particularly like his description of 4 Levels of New Literacy:
1)Personal use
2)Popular use
3)Professional use
4)Innovative use
And there are a lot of useful links and embeds in this presentation! Enjoy.

This is a great definition and explanation of digital literacy! I really like the quote about the fire hydrant, it does feel like that sometimes! I'm wondering what other tools you would suggest as good tools for developing these digital literacy skills?
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, thanks!

Hi Jo,
ReplyDeleteI found this site recently - it is lovely as a quick reference and inspiration point for web 2.0 tools that can be used in all sorts of scenarios/subjects/contexts:

I think, fundamentally, the best approach for digital literacy needs to be holistic - a whole school or organisation approach - it needs to integrate core values, opportunities for practice, reflection, feedback and the development of judgement across the curriculum (or professional training program). Consistency of critical thinking skills and ethics, context and variety are all so important. So many challenges ahead!
